Works 84% of the Muscles

When rowing on the WaterRower you use a massive 84% of your muscle mass. Other common aerobic exercise equipment such as treadmills, cycles, ellipticals and even other rowing machines, use far less muscle mass, burn fewer calories and generating less exercise benefit.

The Oarsperson utilizes the various muscle groups in proportion to their strength, generating a uniform aerobic load over all muscle groups. A workout at 80% intensity produces an aerobic load of 80% in the muscles of the arms, 80% in the muscles of the torso and 80% in the muscles of the legs. In this way rowing recruits the muscle groups uniformly and proportionally to their strength, optimizing the exercise benefit derived given the fatigue limits of the muscles.

Many so called whole body exercises (and indeed many conventional rowing machines) load the muscle groups disproportional, hence the limits of the exercise done are the fatigue limits of the most heavily loaded muscle groups.

For example, conventional air resistance rowing machines are very heavy at the beginning of the stroke, and light toward the end. By working the muscles of the legs more than the those of the torso and arms the legs fatigue first before those of the arms and torso.

Maximising muscle mass, maximises gain
